German Medal Makers and their Marks 1813 – 1957” by Mark Woods

    Hello,

Does anyone have the book “German Medal Makers and their Marks 1813 – 1957” by Mark Woods?

I am very interested in your opinion about this book. Can you recommend it?

    Many thanks in advance.

I have the first edition which is full of blatant mistakes. Like first came the PKZ numbers and then the LDO "sometimes in 1941". Typically for authors who cannot read the original language documents... There also seem to be some mistakes in the attribution of makers of the Great War era. But maybe all those were corrected in this edition ????!!!

Yes, there are mistakes in the first edition and some of the same mistakes are carried over to the second edition. For instance: the logo which we now know belonged to E. Ferd. Wiedmann is still being identified to Hermann Wernstein. But on the other hand, there is a photo in the book which confirms the "sword flanked by the letters A and S" logo as belonging to Ad. Schwerdt, when most thought it was Alfred Stubbe. So while some old errors are perpetuated, the book is still loaded with lots of good information. In my opinion the book is an excellent presentation of a complex subject matter. The mistakes do not negate the value of this book and I feel that every collector should get a copy. Frankly, I think it would be an impossible task to have a book on this subject matter that is completely free of mistakes. There are many, many excellent reference books available today but I've yet to discover the "perfect" one. Overall, I like this book, I find it useful, and I have no reservations about recommending it to others.

      Best regards,
      Tom

Just received my copy from Mark Woods. You need to contact him and he will ship it out to you.

I agree Tom. This is a very good book with this edition IMO. Lots of useful information, photos of the factories and machines. Some errors, none that egregious. You may not have noticed but the book has an addendum, attached to this post, in the back of the book or maybe it was in the shipping box and you threw it away by mistake. Anyway, here it is.

I have no problems recommending this book to anyone.

          Hi John,

Thanks for making me aware of this. I have not seen this errata sheet. Actually, the second edition I have belongs to a friend of mine and I have been comparing it against my first edition. I think I will be buying the second edition too.

          Thanks again,
          Tom

Another error repeated continuously by authors, not sure where it started, but it is Aug. G. Tham and Rudolf Tham, not Tam.

So on page 48 Chancellery Numbers 101 and 103 should be changed to Tham.

His RZM M1 code numbers 164 and 165 are correct with Tham.

Then on page 308 it is back to August Tam but should be Tham and on page 315 same problem, Rudolf Tam when it should be Tham.

I will send an email to the author for him to update his errata page.

            John

I just received my copy and I think it looks quite interesting. Need to create time to read it, but I'll see if there are many mistakes made.

I just received the "Combined Edition 2013" of the "German Medal Makers & Their Marks" and I can recomment it (now) as a very handy and concise reference book (in a very good binding quality!) for the collector. Sure, there are the usual misspellings of German names and the missing "double dots", but that might only distract the German reader and not the English one. There might be some other (minor) errors, but that we have in all books!

A very nice compilation about the topic and I am glad that I bought the latest edition - it is a huge improvement and will have a good place in my reference library! Highly recommended! ( http://www.mwmilitaria.co.uk/index.php )
