I have received my copy of "Rations of the German Wehrmacht in World War II" by Colonel Jim Pool and Thomas Bock.

I have spent the past three days going through this fascinating book that is monumental in covering not only the every day rations, but the labeling, packaging, production, storeage, and supply system. As with all Schiffer publications, the book is hard bound with very high quality 302 glossy pages. I could not count the thousands of photos, but the photos and text are fascinating.

Colonel Pool and Thomas Bock are to be congratulated for this work. I am sure this book will become the 'bible' for collectors wishing to complete their displays, reenactors who would like to be accurate, and those who wish to identify the ration items they may have collected. I have little doubt that wants lists will be updated. I know that mine is.

Think i'll have to get this one. I'm most interested to see how the contents of the book stack up against what i've been digging up the last 10 years or so. I've seen enough Da 75cl wine bottles, aluminium herring cans and AM meat cans to last a lifetime

Simply FANTASTIC!!!! I had the privilege of reading Jim's initial draft of this book and contribute many of my photos towards it. I must say I am blown away on how it came out. If anyone plans on picking up items to display with their uniforms and equipment....This is the book to have for reference on rations used by the German Armed Forces so you can identify what you have, where it came from...who made it along with many other details!! I received my copy earlier this week and I can't seem to put it down.

WHW recipe books

Does anyone know of WHW or other homefront organization recipe books made during the period?

I'm certain that various organizations published recipe books for the homefront. The WHW had implemented Eintopf Sundays or one pot Sundays and must have published recipes. Of course this is outside my area of knowledge. Numerous private individuals and companies published recipe books and many family magazines published recipes. Just wanted to let everyone know that Tom and I have been scrutinizing the book to identify any errors. Despite our best efforts some errors did manage to make it into the final product. Fortunately most are very minor ie typos etc. There is one quantity on a special ration (along with a picture) that is wrong. Actually its wrong in the chapter on Emergency rations but correctly stated in one of the annexs. There is also a conclusion that has to be changed based on some new info. Schiffer does not have a procedure to get changes out in a timely fashion. The only time they make changes is if a book is reprinted. Of course this may or may not ever happen. So what we're doing is putting together a PDF file that will be made available to anyone that wants one. It will be the same file provided to Schiffer. It will reflect all the errors we found plus will include a number of pictures that we obtained after the book went to print or in the case of photos from the Bundesarchive, photos we recieved written permission to use. We're still waiting to make sure the books are available to everyone, who wants to purchase a copy. As far as we know they are still only available in the U.S. Then we will start a new thread providing everyone the info on how to recieve the change/update file. Regards Jim

Kevin and everyone else who responded-Thank you. Tom and I tried our best. Its not the complete story but its a start. Of course if if anyone has time we would appreciate folks leaving comments on the Amazon, Barnes and Noble sites etc. We're interested in soliciting honest reviews be they positive or negative. Tom and I looked at reviews of other books to try to gauge what the collector community expected in a book. Books aren't cheap these days and people should feel like they got what they paid for. My copy arrived today. My first surprise was just how big it is and the quality of the photographs and information is really top draw.

There's an incredible amount of detail in the book, i never knew the was so much to know about the humble 'Wehrm' tin cans!

This is an absolute must for anyone that goes digging.
