Iwould like to see a movie about the rise of the third reich, from 1933 - 1941. I bet they don´t have the guts to do a movie like that yet in Germany. -
What about "Hitler: The Rise of Evil" from 2003? While it wasn't up to 1941, it did get as far as 1934. A really good movie that was done quite well.
I do think though that we need a movie that perhaps could be a min-series of sorts. Nothing like Winds of War mind you but rather a true telling of WWII and the events leading up to it. Kind of lik ehow Band of Brothers was done. That would be awesome to see...Comment

Any attempt to do a politically "involved" movie will be a failure as PC folks won´t allow neutral picture to emerge. Therefore a more "action" oriented movie would be good. For example, the attack on Eben Emael. Or a film from a tanker´s perspective. Or a film on the Crete campaign.
If politics allowed truer to the fact films, then perhaps a film based on Walter Post´s "Die Ursachen des Zweites Weltkrieg" and especially the machinations of FDR in backing up Polish stubbornness (one Finnish historian noted that Polish behaviour was such that the only superpower of today wouldn´t tolerate it for one minute).Comment

What about a Kursk movie? With the level of realism CGI can achieve now they could accurately represent the tank battles the way they should be done ,not like Patton for instanceComment

Make this book into a movie. I know there is controversy about the authenticity of this book - but it would bring the grim experience of the Eastern Front to life, cannot be criticized as 'Nazi', involves the GD of course. It would blow Saving Pvt Ryan out of the water....

As for "Hitler: The Rise of Evil" I liked elements of this, but Hitler was caricatured to a ridiculous extent. Why would anyone follow such an odious character as that portrayed in this film. The real Hitler was a massively charismatic man, very likeable, physically courageous etc. That's the whole point - that's why people followed him. But to portray that in a film would be obviously very dangerous politically. The famous historian Ian Kershaw was appointed as historical advisor but later demanded his name be withdrawn from the credits as the film had strayed too far from his historical input. It was felt that to portray him accurately would be to portray him too sympathetically.... Bear that in mind if and when you watch it! It's interesting, but it ain't history.

The Definitive WW2 German Movie
I have to agree with many of the comments heretofore voiced that an "epic" in depth look at the German Soldier fighting from the early to late War period is definitely long overdue! But the key to the success and authenticity of the picture rests in the expansive scale, quality of production, and the underlying mandate that it be made by a German production company WITH German actors! Saving Private Ryan, Band of Brothers, and the forthcoming The Pacific all reinforce how the industry can produce quality war Movies (or miniseries..) that are well researched, acted, and properly financed IF there is a desire on the part of the production company and its backers to finance and film the picture correctly!
Personally, I do not believe that there is a German film or entertainment production company that will touch the subject of a gritty combat film given the still volatile political issue of Germany's actions during that era. One just has to look at how much NEEDLESS and INCOHERENT criticism there was directed towards actor Bruno Ganz' magnificent portrayal of Hitler in Der Untergang! That film is IMHO without doubt one of the most magnificient films to come out of Germany about the War and again IMHO the best portrayal of Hitler yet performed. Despite the fact that no truth was withheld or blemish of character overlooked in the film; both Ganz and the director were excoriated for making Hitler seem "human."?! As if Hitler was supposed to be from Dante's Ninth Canto or from the Outer limits...? My point: the desire to do a picture portraying the hardships and courage of the German soldier during the War, no matter how well crafted and financed with care by a German picture company, will never be able to withstand the criticism for its production and to my mind thus will for the forseeable future inhibit a decently financed and well crafted project!
As collectors and enthusiasts we all wish to see such a project come to fruition, but one just has to look at the contretemps over the initial pre-production of Sajer's Forgotten Soldier. The poor choice of director (Verhoven..), the restrictive budget, and lack of a focus on how to portray the character as written in the epic book; all showed how such project's run afoul if not caringly nutured from the start by an individual who has a passion to see the film through to its rightful conclusion! I guess our only hope is if Tom Hanks and Spielberg can inspire and financially support some German production company to do a miniseries..but (SIGH!) I really would not hold my breath!
