Hot Motors, Cold Feet by Helmut Gunther is a great Das Reich memoir. He was involved in the Moscow front. I also know a vet who was in that battle, but his memoirs have not been published in English.

"The Gods of War" by Hans-Werner Woltersdorf is a memoir published around 1990 by an Untersturmfuhrer of the DR. I haven't read it since then, but if I recall correctly, it was somewhat philosophical in nature, and also dealt with connecting with the son he fathered by a French girl while the DR was in France. The story jumps from 1944 to 1961 quite often, if I recall correctly.

Maybe someone who has read it more recently than I can give a good opinion as to whether it is worth reading.

Weidinger's own book on the "DF" is also a good read ("Kameraden bis zum Ende"), but is not an autobiography per se, but a regimental history.

Also, if you read German "SS-Beutedeuetscher" by Sasi Schneid is great. I met him and he is a great man. He's a DR vet who was at Oradeur sur Glane.

I want to say that Woltersdorf was with the Armored Recon Unit, but cannot be definate. He was not with the Pz Regt, that much I am sure of.

Gods of War was a huge disappointment for me as it was so philosophical and didn't really give an account of the combat. So be aware of this before you purchase.

And I made a type error. I had meant to say Sadi Schneid not Sasi.
