Excellent WWII Movie: "As Far As My Feet Will Carry Me" (2002)

Just saw this last nite. It is the incredible story of an Oberleutnant of the Gebirgsjaeger, who is captured by the soviets and sent to the lead mines of Siberia, only to escape and make it back to Munich after a trek of 8,000 miles (14,000 km) and 3 years!

The movie was made in 2002, and is in German with English subtitles. (see the website www.soweitdiefuessetragen.de .
The book was first published in 1955, and the author changed the name of the real soldier (it is Cornelius Rost) to Clemens Forell, as Rost was afraid of the KGB coming after him.

It makes any other escape/adventure story look like a walk in the park.

PS--the US DVD is missing 30 minutes, so I do not know what they cut.

Glad to help, Paul. The movie was so good, I ordered the book (which is supposed to be even better). It has been translated into 23 languages, and has been continuously in print since 1955 (I still cannot believe that I never heard of it until now!):

I would never have heard of it, if not for the head's up.

        Thanks Stonemint !!

The first film made in black and white was much better.

Well, I just learned something new (again), didn't know there was an earlier version. Hopefully they will put it on DVD with english subtitles.

Its not just another film, its one of the most impressing films ever made in germany (in my opinion). The new one by far dont reach this quality.

I have the '69 printing of this story. But, in the book he claims he was a FJ officer who fought in Holland, Kreta, and Russia. The DVD states he was a GJ. I have the DVD as well but haven't watched it yet.

I just watched the movie the other day. Very good movie. Love the "On Location Look". It is very similar to a book I read awhile back. It was about some Polish Prisoners that escaped and did the trek by foot all the way to India. The individual that wrote it lives in England now. It too was very interesting(Book)
