I am a novice myself and I found that book to be of some help. Has plenty of illustrations and has price evaluations for every WW2 item I can imagine, although prices have risen a bit since the book has been written. Gives you an analysis of each collectable part of the hobby and gives you a general idea of what to watch out for and what to consider when considering collecting a certain type of item.

Bewertungs is one heck of a book, for novice and veteran alike.

Note: The $999.99 price there is quite a mistake.
It is not cheap, but there is an extra 9 there, should be $99.99 - I just sent the seller a note about his mistake.

If you buy the pocket sized edition from the dealer's site itself it is only 25 Euros...

hucks216 is right on, this is the third addition, that is the most up to date. You will want to focus in is one or two areas after awhile. Buy books on the subject you like when you get a focus.

A Collector's Guide to Third Reich Militaria by Robert Lumsden is a very good over all info for new and advance collectors. It was my first book about 3rd reich collecting and it help alot.

Detlev Niemann price catalog is a helpful one.
