Sounds like an excellent film in the making, hopefully as someone has already pointed out in French or German language, i think "Downfall" was more powerful due to the German language.

Does anyone know what awards the author earned or was awarded during his service, I would imagine a drivers badge to start with but with all his combat experiance possibly an Iron cross or 2 and an Infantry Assault/close combat badge and even a Tank descruction badge?

Any ideas?

For the most part of the book the author does not mention any awards given to him. Only mention that a comrade had been awarded with something that looks like an Iron Cross. However, I think that he was entitled to at least an IAb and an Wound Badge (if I'm not mistaken he was wounded at some point of the book).

Polish Movie

No, that's from an unauthorized Polish adaptation of the book = they did not bother securing legal permission from Sajer or his agent to make this rather low-rent version - if you look closely, most of their weapons are carved from wood. It's almost as if a bunch of reenactors made it.
As far as I know, filming hasn't yet started on Paul Verhoeven's authorized apaptation - but it's still a "Go" as far as I know.

It was cancelled around a year ago due to the financial backers pulling out.

Who knows...could be another "All Quiet on the Western Front" in the making...We can hope, right? With the tech they have now...they can do all kinds of neat stuff that could never have been done before, and make it look realistic and great.
Man, just seen the other post.... Oh well, there is still a chance out there, you just never know.

To be honest I am glad it has been cancelled. It has always been one of my favourite reads ever since I was a kid and I don't think they would ever of been able to do it justice in a 2 & a half hour film.
