    The One That Got Away

Last night, I just watched "The One That Got Away," the 1957 UK-made movie about the only German prisoner of war to escape from Allies during WW2. Hardy Kruger plays the Luftwaffe pilot Franz von Werra who was shot-down over England, and after several escapes, manages to escape from custody in Canada and make it to then-neutral USA.

Its a pretty good film, no one is seen caricatured as evil or scarred or a skinhead or sinister (as opposed to the silliness in so many movies including SPR), other than von Werra is portrayed as a rather vain and single-minded person, apparently like the real guy!

Interestingly, Hardy Kruger (who also played Heinz Harmel in a "Bridge too Far") was drafted into the 38th SS Nibelungen Division, and surrendered to US troops in 1945.

    Hi Billmunny,

I have this film on DVD, ironically from a German source; and is entitled "Einer Kam Durch".
I remember watching this movie on TV as a child but the only version that I could obtain of this British movie was from Amazon.de!
Still a good movie, but rather ironic - only in German with no subtitles!
Possibly it can be obtained now in it's "correct" English form!

    Best regards,

    John.
