I just watched the East German-made film about a German-born Leutenant serving in the Soviet Army in the last months of the war in Germany...born in Cologne, he speaks fluent German and is part of a mobile unit that broadcasts messages to German troops asking them to surrender.
While the film is conspicuously devoid of the atrocities committed by the Soviets against German troops and civilians alike (there is fantasy scene where a teenage girl seeks refuge with the Soviet Lt. and s largely ignored--in reality she would've been gang-raped by Soviet soldiers and perhaps killed), there are several cool shots of MP44s and T-34s in action.
My favorite scene takes place in Spandau fortress where a fanatical SS sturmbannfuhrer is questioning a HJ kid who has destroyed a Soviet tank. The kids talks about diving into a cellar with two panzerfausts when he saw the tank coming, only to emerge and hit the tank with the first panzerfaust, and then, when the tank commander emerged from the disabled tank, he shot the Soviet commander with the panzerfaust(!) blowing his head and arms off!
The SS officer commends the boy and complains that there are no extra medals in the beseiged fortress and gives him his own EK1. He then asks the kid if he wants a Waffen SS uniform, and the boy exclaims affirmatively.
Interesting movie...shot in black and white, from the Communist perspective.
