I have just finished reading this book on Stalingrad by Heinz Schroter, a German war correspondent who was there during the battle. This is my first visit to the book section, so if this is common knowledge, my apologies.
The book is a very well written day by day almost minute by minute account of one of the most horrific battles in history. I am not a big fan of books that deal with only strategy from a commanding officer's perspective. This however has it all, life in the trenches, their thoughts as they came to realize that Hitler had abandoned them, the last days of starvation and sub zero temperatures, many fighting to the last bullet and last crumb of bread.
This is an old book, originally written in 1943 when the facts were fresh in the authors mind. I highly recommend this as an excellent read!
