    Opinions about books

    Hello everybody,

    I finally decided to buy some books about classic guns, since I have noticed that my library has a lot of "holes" in this area. So, is there better place than this board to ask for advices?

    There are a plenty of them around, but the prices are a little bit tough to me (who is overseas...) so I´ll have to pick one title for each gun, starting with the following:

    - Lugers: a general book ranging from the Imperial up to WWII would be great. I know those fantastic books by Jan Still (a nice chap by the way) but they are out of print and thos available are expensive. What about your opinions on "Lugers at Radom"? There is another one for sale called "P-08" ( ) with a lot of pictures of Luger in use but I do not have any clue about this one (check at www.simpsonltd.com)...

    - Broomhandles (Mauser C96): as an owner of three Brooms, it a shame that I don´t have any books about them . However, I simply don´t know anyone. Any advice would be great.

    - K43 - of course, I will take the "Hitler´s Garand", the definitive book about it (I will talk to ou later, Brian... ).

    - Thompson M1A1 - I borrowed the "American Thunder" and I found it very good (and the price is nice, too). But there are any other better options?

    - Pocket guns (Walthers PP, Mauser HSc, MAuser 1914 Sauer 38H and so on) of the Third Reich: there is a book about them by Still, but it is also out of print. So any comments would be great.

    Well, that´s it folks. I´m looking foward for your tips!

    Thompson.. Thompson: The American Legend. The First American Submachine Gun. by Trcie L Hill. Published by Collector Grade Publications.

    The Gun that Made the Twenties Roar by William Helmer

    Luger.. The Luger book by John Walter
    The Luger Story by John Walter
    Luger Variations by Harry Jones
    Luger Holsters and Accessories by Eugene Bender
    Luger: The Multi-National Pistol by Charles Kenyon
    Any of the books from the Jan Sill series

    Broomhandle Mauser..

    Know Your Broomhandle by Hoffschmidt
    The Mauser Self-Loading Pistol by Belford and Dunlap
    System Mauser by Breathed and Schroeder
    Broomhandle Pistol by Erickson


    If you'd like further references just let me know.

    The difficulty with some of the above is that some titles are becoming collector's item in and of themselves with the expected increase in purchase price.

    Hope this list gets you started

      Referende Firearms Books

      I neglected to include Walther titles.

      The P.38 series by Warren Buxton
      Walther, volumes 1-3 by Rankin

      Both of these titles have been reprinted and should be available at less cost than the harder to find first editions


      There is also the Know Your Walther by Hoffschmidt

      There are more if you want more.

        Reference for Firearms...pt. 3

        Sorry to pop back at you like a Jack in the Box..but at this time of the morning my mind is reeling.

        It occurs to me that you might go on Google and look up the various websites concerned with these firearms. They are super sources of information. Lugers, Walthers and Broomhandles all have their sites and can provide you with much interesting info and fellowship with like minded individuals.

        Sorry for the fragmented answers to your question.

          Firearms Books

          Hallo again..

          For Mauser Pistols, I'd suggest finding:

          Roy G Pender III Mauser Pocket Pistols, 1910-1946, Published by Collectors Press, 1971

          For G41 and G43 there are the Peter R. Senich titles, The German Sniper, 1914-1945 and The German Assault Rifle, 1935-1945 for passing info on these 2 rifle types.

          For German pistols in general, I'd suggest the 4 volume series by Whittington entitled German Pistols and Holsters 1934-1945

          I hope you will check out some of these titles. If you desire more, I'm sure I can find more titles of interest.

            I have a signed copy of "System Mauser" for sale right now on the estand!! Please check it out, and I would recommend buying it since you are a broomhandle collector!

            Besides the book above, some books I would also recommend for you:

            1. Jan Stills' "Axis Pistols"
            2. "Lugers at Random"
            3. "Luger Tips"
            4. "German Pistols and Holsters", Volumes II and III.
            5. "J.P. Sauer u. Sohn" Volumes I and II.
            6. "Walther The German Legand"

            Remember, one can never have too much reference material!

              About books...

              Thanks for the clues. I´ll look around to find some of those books to increase my library. In fact I decided do get some basic ones, because I´m a little bit tired with "google" searchs. (Nothing personal, Ramon! ).

              Sorry to say that, but to find one single information you have to dig among thousand of trash sites!!!! Besides that, although I´m "only" 28 years-old, I´m a kind of old fashioned reader, always prefering to read a good book instead of a PC´s screen.

              Concerning the search for information in the Internet I learn to use and trust in this Forum (although are others, this one is my first stop). Matt, Doug and a lot of you guys are doing a nice job here, always sharing information.

              However sometimes I think that I´m bothering you all with some stupid questions that could be answered with one or two books, if I had them! On the other hand, I could help more people here, which is always a pleasure.

              So, I think that any, I mean, any tips or critics about guns related books will be nice. So keep post them...

                Thank you for the compliments. Both Doug and myself (as well as the other members and fellow moderators), try hard to keep this site informative for newer and older collectors alike.

                Don't ever be afraid of asking questions here on this forum. That is what this place is for. Remember, there is no such thing as a stupid question, just stupid people who ask questions! (Douglas, trust me, you're not one of those! )

                Good luck finding the books. I found that book "Hitlers Garands" for sale by some Canadian company. It was only $60 I think!
