Received mine today from Jack Hatter at Volume Control...$59 shipped (I'm sure he appreciates this thread ). This is truly an exceptional book. The content is amazing and the production quality is very high, similar to a Bender book. No library should be without this one, and I'm surprised it hasn't had more interest

I have spoken to Jack regarding this thread and the seeming lack of interest in this book. He stated the book was moving pretty well. Thank God there is a whole world out there that does indeed read and doesn't use the internet for 100% of their knowledge.

Fewer books are done due to less support and people being to lazy to actually read. On other sites I see questions that have been replied multiple times for years in various books. Some are also simply to cheap to buy a book.

I have this book on my nightstand and am working through it. Just wanted to reiterate how exceptional it is! The photographs and award documents are wonderful . I don't think I've ever seen so many RK doc groups pictured together before. It is written in a very fast moving, engaging style. Unique for a translation. It also appears to be very well researched. I think it odd that recent (and lesser) books have been hailed like the second coming of Christ on WAF but this one has only been mentioned in this thread....guess it has too many words

It does have too many words...for the common collector here. As stated in all my posts here, it is a great book...for all the reasons you just mentioned and more. I am only up to the "P"s now and like you try to read a little each day. It is a great read w/lots of photos!

Another similar read I picked up last year was French MacLean's Luftwaffe promotional documents 2-volume series. It was written in a similar style, but far less photos and primarily the only documents shown are the promotional docs. It does however state (like Berger's volume) the reasons why/how they were promoted...stuka pilots, fighter pilots Fallschrim. troops, etc. I actually made it through MacLean's two volume set faster than I am making it through Berger's. I had more critiques of Maclean's book as opposed to Berger's though. I am not sure how Berger's could get any better.

Fran, how did you like MacLean´s two volumes overall? I have tried to find reviews of these two without any success. How extensive is the text in these two? I have seen his Camp Men which was really poor as it basically assembled a string of data without any decent analysis.

Without hijacking the thread too much, I liked French's two volume set. Now I do have critiques of it and would state that (I believe) it should have been more like this Berger book which gave more photos and scans of documents, etc. French's volumes probably average say 3-6 pages in length per Biography. The text averages a page or two per individual and is written like Berger's volume in that it takes you through birth (where), various units the individual was in, in the case of fighter pilots it gives "kills"...what type of plane and where shot down, when certain awards were given like Honor Goblet or Knight's cross and if the individual lived or died. The remaining pages are scans of the promotion/efficiency documents which he translates portions...which are interesting to say the least

MacLean's volumes are far closer to this book (Berger's) than his previous "Camp Men" (which I also own.) I am glad I own and have read MacLean's 2-volume set on KC winners' promotion/efficiency documents. I am a reader though and folks looking for a picture book are not going to like these.

                      Hi Mark-

Not this again...Why do you feel it necessary to stereotype an entire collecting community for their perceived lack of support or reading habits? There are plenty of us that do provide support to authors, do buy and read your books, etc. However, you do realize this is just a hobby for others? In a perfect world, of course, authors would have access to all the materials they needed in collections, but this is not a perfect world. Trust me, there is plenty of blame to go around, neither is side without fault...

How do you think I felt when I saw one of the my Knight's Cross groups (not to mention a signed private portrait of another 'Träger') splashed across the pages of Florian's book here with zero credit given, not even a simple 'thank you'? Without my contribution, Florian had practically nothing to show for this soldier, yet he couldn't give credit where it was due?

The author, when confronted with the issue, tried to pass the buck, got caught in a lie, and never apologized...a real class act.

My point is simple, collectors aren't the only part of the problem...Authors with a sense of entitlement, authors with a generally negative view of their readership, and authors who are above giving credit or simply saying 'thank you' are equally to blame for the lack of support from the collecting community. We reap what we sow...

                        John,

And which KC groups are you talking about ?
You have a chance to at least get some credits here on WAF....

                        Cheers,

Thanks for the comments Fran! I am not into pictures, I prefer text volumes. Photos are OK provided the quality is of high quality (=shot by pros on pro equipment).

Hi I've received this wonderful book really love it unfortunately on page 403 I found it folded and the paper is not cut properly because it sticks out about an inch or more from the bottom and half an inch on the lower side. I'm just wondering if anybody has found this printing problem!

To the best of my knowledge everyone who ever loaned me anything got credit and most got a book copy regardless of amount of material used. Keep in mind the payment authors get, ask anyone who has done one and the time involved.

As to those to lazy to buy a book, my e-mail is filled weekly with those wanting "pages XX-through XX" of a book scanned and sent to them related to some collectible they have rather than pay for a book. Books must sell for others to be written. People who spend 5 figures on a grouping who can't see $40 for a book that obviously adds to the item value are simply cheap. Its right up there with "I'm posting this that could have been of use in the book but was to lazy to contribute, but I'll be sure and ask for help if I want something." Its a general fact of the community. No collector makes or breaks a project, but if you want data it requires effort by some others than an author.

"my e-mail is filled weekly with those wanting "pages XX-through XX" of a book scanned and sent to them related to some". That seems to be too common an occurrence as various peoples on various boards request scans as they are too cheap to buy the book. I personally request an occasional scan of a page or two, but only to get an impression how the pages are designed, a glimpse on the writing style etc.

BTW Mark, I have been told by a reliable source that all copies of the DKiG vol. 1 have a minor flaw in the rear cover, a smudge that looks like a stain? I have seen two copies and both had it.

Rene, I have seen one copy of Berger´s book and it did not have that flaw you described.
