    Heartbreak Ridge

    Here is a great Clint Eastwood movie I just picked up a few days ago. I heard much about the film but never got around to watching it. It's personally one of my favorite Eastwood films from his large inventory. Clint Eastwood portrays a rough USMC vet deserving of more respect than is given and finds himself training a lax Recon unit...

    One minor thing that seemed odd to me was the fact that the Cuban infantry at Grenada in the film were wearing what appeared to be Mauser pouches while wielding AKMs.

    Plot summary from IMDB:

    "Sergeant Tom Highway, a hardened, tough veteran of Korea and Vietnam returns to the United States for his last tour of duty with the U.S. Marine Corps. He is assigned to training a recon unit. Their cool, trendy and 'hippy' approach to military life is a reminder to him that he is, in the words of his commanding officer, a major, "an anachronism" - useful only "in case of war". Conveniently, a war does arise (the invasion of Grenada in October, 1983) and successfully tests both his usefulness and the effectiveness of the new recruits. Written by Dave Cook {cookd@mcmail.cis.mcmaster.ca}

    Marine Gunnery Sergeant Tom Highway has been in the Corps since the Korean War and would like to see some action and a victory before he retires. He requests to be transfered to the unit that he was once busted out of. Upon arriving the commanding officer knows of Highway's reputation, especially of his lack of respect for his superiors, warns him that he is going to keep an eye on him. Highway's assigned to train a recon unit which consists mostly of deadbeats. But Highway's determined to turn them into true marines and they are not exactly pleased with him, at first. And he is also trying to reconnect with his ex-wife. Written by rcs0411@yahoo.com "

        I served in the First Reconnaissance Battalion at Camp Pendleton, CA around the time this movie was made. The movie was filmed on location in our battalion compound and most of the "extras" were actual recon personnel. Clint Eastwood spent a great deal of time with the unit and would occasionally go out for beers at a biker bar near the base called "Big Helen's" to shoot pool w/ the Marines from the battalion. He would often get the "you look just like Clint Eastwood" response from the bar regulars...funny. That movie always gives me a warm and fuzzy and reminds me of much younger days!

            BTW, the Rangers made the rescue, not the Marines.

              You are kidding right?
              This has to be the worst movie in his history as an actor and possibly one of the top ten worst war movies. Outside of eastwood and a couple others the acting is horrible.

              Yikes!

                Also does anyone believe that a recon unit would be that "loose?" Also I didn't like it that Clint couldn't call cadence (oh, right, he was wounded in the neck which hurt his voice ). However, I will say Clint looked hard core in the uniform.

                  Oh lighten up, it's not 100% realistic and I never believed it was. I recall there was one magazine that stated Apocalypse Now was one of the worst war movies, and yet its become a classic in its own right. Like I said, Heartbreak Ridge has good one liners, and it is entertaining.

                    Did I mention realism....? Now I will, realism, what realism - what a sh!tty movie. Do not get me wrong, I have watched it a few times...it is like a trainwreck, you are hooked into watching it because of how bad it is.

                    The acting or lack thereof in his platoon besides eastwood was non-existent. The acting was attrocious, the plot...was there one? Whether or not is was realistic doesn't even come into play after the first two. If you want to hear bad language from beginning til end, this is for you.

                      Whatever, to each his own I suppose. Not every film created will be universally liked by all.

                        I liked the first part a lot! Maybe not realistic, but good entertainment. Every aspiring Sgt 1 class or future gunny wanted his tough look in the eigties-start nineties...

                        Th combat part was the worst.
