I have that movie in my collection, but I need to watch it again. It is a great movie, but I haven't seen it in quite some time. This thread created just the right reminder for me.

        Thanks,

        Chris

about 2 months ago I made my 11 year old daughter watch it with me , and I was able to use it as a "learning experience" with my filling in gobs of history info on the Japanese takeover of China ,etc. On the DVD at the end, the author of the book/turned into movie is interviewed and he explains this story is based on his life as a kid in China(with fictitious kid's fantasy ideas mixed in). He really did lose his parents and get interned. As a kid, He really was impressed by his Japanese captors bravery. Craziest of all ,the John Malkovich character was real--and the author said "he was the only person during the whole time of his captivity that showed him true friendliness, especially as he purposely forced the kid to see the harsh truths of survival...which then actually helped him to survive.
