    Hochwald near Trier Germany

    Hi Guys,

I am planning a trip to Germany this summer. Destination is the forrest 'Hochwald' near Trier. Is there any 'WW2 history' in this area to be found ? Maby forum menbers have suggestions (web links, books, or own stories to share) ?

    Thanks,

    Jac

There's a fair amount of history in the area. There was a small KZ/Arbeitslager near Trier, if you take the Autobahn towards Kaiserslautern, it's only about 10 or 15 minutes outside of Trier (2nd or 3rd exit, don't go all the way to K'town). Look for signs that say "Gedenkstaette".
Also, Luxembourg is only 20 - 30 minutes away, it was the southern boundary of the Battle of the Bulge. Good Bulge museums there, a whole bunch. Belgium is about 30-45 minutes away, more Bulge stuff. I believe Wittlich, about 10 mins. from Trier was also a major staging area for the bulge, but not much to see there.
I think Patton came through Trier...but not 100% on that.
Anyhoo, there's a ton of history there.

Their is a great restaurant in Trier that I actually ate at twice when I was there. They have a cool little wine sampler where they bring you about 3 small glasses of different area wines. I've had that for beer but never for wine. Oh yeah, and the food was really good too. Zum Domstein

The Battle Of The Bulge was fought north-east of Trier. I spent eight years stationed at Spangdahlem AB which is just north of Trier. There is a town called Prum which is about an hour drive north of Trier. Just outside of the town of Prum there is a ridge called Schneifel. Both sides of the road that runs through that are is full of foxholes and remains of German Westwall bunkers. The foxholes are only a few feet deep but one can still find unexpended small arms rounds, shrapnel and an occasional UXO (unexploded ordnance)

Trier has a wonderful walkplatz (american slang) and has great places to eat. Good luck and have a great time.

          Another hochwald?

I thought for awhile you where talking of the hochwald up near xanten and manenbaum and near the reichswald forest,my favourite battle area of the fallshirmjäger in early 1945.So there are 2 with the same name maybe more too?.
