    Best Book Ever Read

Just curious and sure I'll get alot of opinions: What is the best military/war book you folks have ever read? Mine is Robert Kurson's "Shadow Diver's", Russell Davis' "Marine At War", Gene Sledge's "With the Old Breed", and Edgar Whitcomb's "Escape from Corrigedor" to name a few.

    Let's hear 'em! Eric

K98_man, he may be a friend of yours, but you have no problem with his story?

Not really. He tells it like it is. What problems are you speaking of?

          Patrick O'Brian's "H.M.S. Surprise".
and the other 19.5 books of his in the series. But the former especially.
          Thanks,

Here! Here! For Lucky Captain Jack and his surgeon Stephan! Excellent book and a mastery of the English Language - that from a Yank! The Public School System would do better to offer this than much of what there is now...

I have to add any of the Sherlock Holmes Mysteries. Again, an excellent example of the English language at work, and very clever to boot!

For TR History...Panzer Leader by Guderian or Grenadiers by Meyer.

The Best Book you have ever read

              Hello,
I have read thousands of books and have enjoyed most of them. If I was to pick a military history book that has to be one of my top 5 favotrites, it has to be The Washing of the Spears.

              Who else has read it?

Here is a review I did on the book several years ago on this forum:

Have you read "Guns, Germs and Steel" Jody? I bet you enjoyed that in more ways than one! (maybe state carriculum is different)

I read "The Washing of the Spears" and yes, it is an excellent book.
Unfortunately, I don't recall the title, but another great Victorian British colonial war book I read was about the 1st Afghan War, and the attempted escape from Kabul to the Northwest Frontier (Jalalabad?), in which only one man made it alive.
                    Other great books I've read:

                    The Forgotten Soldier
                    Soldat
                    We Were Soldiers
                    Goodbye, Darkness
                    Breakout:The Chosen Reservoir Campaign
                    Men of Waterloo

For fiction, I love anything by Bernard Cornwell, plus the Flashman series and "Six Men of Gascony". Also CS Forrester's books are good.

"About Face" by David Hackworth. A book I truly had trouble putting down, and I think I've read it maybe 3 times.

"Chicken Hawk" is real good too.

                      best

Hank, "chicken hawk" is a great read. I also think "the forgotten soldier" is a really nice book. Jacques

Despite some of the concerns about its pedigree, The Forgotten Soldier is on my list mostly because it was the first book I ever read as a kid in the 80's. But I think my favorite was Ian Kershaw's Adolf Hitler: Hubris and Nemesis. I couldn't put it down.

                            The Bible.
No kidding, check out the battle scenes and present day tactics.
You even have a bit of romance in there.
Spolier...the good guys win in the end.

Also, anything by C. Ryan. The Last Batle is awesome.

I totally agree with you about Cornelius Ryan's "The Last Battle". He was able to interview a lot of the players, and reading it almost makes you feel like you're in Berlin, during those last, desperate days.
