    Pacific theater fiction

I don't have the time now days to read a hard core history book. What I am craving is "chewing gum" for the mind. You know, a small paperback book that is not deep and thought provoking, just fun reading with lots of danger and action.

What I am wondering is if anyone can recommend some WWII fiction set in the Pacific. I was hoping for the Sgt. Rock style of novels or something along those lines. Cheesy pulp novels are what I am after.

    Thanks.

You might try The Corp series by W.E.B. Griffen. These books follow several Marine characters as they fight through the various actions and campaigns in the South Pacific during WWII. The books are quite a bit more sophisticated than the Sgt. Rock comics, but aren't as dense and psychoanalytical as the serious war novels covering this same theater of war, like The Thin Red Liine or The Naked and the Dead. As I recall, the author is fairly accurate in relating the details of the Marine Corp and the actions in which it was involved, while not slowing down the rather exciting storylines.

I also found a great collection of shorts stories by Louis Lamour called "West from Singapore". Not WWII GI stories, but more along the line of pre=war south pacific adventures with tramp freighter captain "Ponga" Jim Mayo batteling German and Japanese agents. Very much the insperation for Tales of the Golden Monkey tv show.
