Recommended: Personal Effects of the German Soldier in WWII by Chris Mason

I highly recommend this new Schiffer book by Chris Mason. The photography is excellent and the narrative concise and to the point. Any collector interested in the small items used by German soldiers will want to pick up a copy.

I agree Mike. Here are a few more comments:

I brought the book to show my parents and they thoroughly enjoyed it. They remembered many of the items and haven't seen most of them since they left Germany.

HMMM... I think I got the wrong book as I was VERY disapointed by it
There was absolutely no write up at all just pictures and captions. I wanted to see a write up on how the rations were distributed and how much and such but nothing of the sort
Also there was no evedence for his stuff just a picture saying "a small box of powderd soup mix" so I am assuming it is wartime? or pre-war or is it post war he makes no reference to why it is wartime which leads me to the fact that only 4 pics in to the book he shows an Esbit stove which the genral consencus think is post war with the serated dege and not streight!? and the watch that is supposed to be stamped "WH" (wehrmacht heer) surely it should be "DH" (Deutshes heer)?
sorry if i sound like im being big headed but between myself and my friend i could have done this in much more detail with just as many items and more!

Then do it. There certainly aren't a ton of books out there in this genre.

Saw this yesterday in a friends house - it looks like a very comprehensive guide.

Based on your recommendations I just bought the book online. When it arrives I will give you my thoughts on it. For those interested the ISBN number is 0764322559 and schiffer books has it for 39.95. It's a 6x9 hardcover with 176 pages and over 320 color and b/w pictures. Looks VERY interesting.

It's a rough guide to a fraction of the personal items that were used. Very little of what i've dug up over the years is represented here, understandably in many cases as much of what's in the book is paper, cardboard or paper labels which don't survive well in the ground.

By the way,the Esbit stove pictured on page 10 is post-war though the carton looks to be wartime.

Well, I got the book and have paged through it several times trying to like it. Nice photography with basic narritive with most pictures. But, I am not that impressed with it overall, especially for the price. I don't collect personal items as a rule so I guess this is not my cup of tea. I don't feel the need to have this book in my library and I will be selling the book.
