Good information Dave. My point was that Germany didn't have THAT model helicopter. I knew they were working on them too.

It was fantasy for the movie, but not a "mistake" as the filmmakers knew what they were doing.

      Grüß Gott Bergkameraden,

The Gebirgsjägers were the first to experiment with the Focke Achgelis Fa 223 Drache cargo helicopter (first flight in 1940) to transport troops and equipment into the mountains. They successfully brought a 75 mm Gebirgsgeschütze 36 to the top of a peak with crew.

This helicopter was the first helicopter to reach production status. Here are a few links about it:

The Germans had the Focke Wulf 61 in 1936. They had production versions of the FA 223 'Dragonfly' and Flettner FI 282. Seeing that the film is set c.1944 with an impending Allied invasion, the inclusion of a helicopter is plausible. As Peter said, but not the type depicted.

To get back to the uniforms, I think the Gestapo man was a throw back to Hogan's Heros. Here is a Major who outranks a full Colonel because he is Gestapo! He's wearing an Allgemeine-SS officer uniform with an Adolf Hitler cuffband, but has all of the high military awards like the German Cross in Gold and I think he was wearing a Close Combat Clasp too. I wish these producers and directors would take these uniforms out of their productions as they are super inaccurate and stick out like a sore thumb to uniform experts.

These were more common in the 1960s. I don't think you've seen much like this in a "realistic" setting in a while. I know there was something similar in the recent Star Trek: Enterprise with the aliens (I don't know how an alien wins a Knights Cross), but I haven't these kind of things in any serious movie in a LONG time.

But I'll also add that producers/directors don't really care about uniform experts. The producers job is to pull everything together from casting and payroll to locations to lunch for everyone (with a lot of underlinings do much of the day to day), while the director cares about the action looks on film.

And keep in mind a baseball fan can probably find a 100 things wrong with "The Natural" or "Eight Men Out," too.

Probably 'poetic license' to make him appear more menacing, I'm suprised he wasnt wearing a black leather overcoat al la the Gestapo dood in Indiana Jones.
