Mark Bando's new Book: "Avenging Eagles"

I finished Mark's new book last Friday and for anyone who is interested in the US 101st Division in Normandy this is a must purchase!

For anyone interested in real tales of war through direct interviews with the veteran this is also the book for you.

Mark has interviewed approx one thousand 101st veterans over the last 30+ years to get the stories in this book and it is some good stuff!

Approx the first half of the book is nothing but tales of training, fighting amongst each other and with other units, getting laid (and getting the clap), etc prior to DDay. The (approx) second 1/2 of the book is nothing but stories of combat and stories some of you will be shocked to hear (such as the shooting of POWs).

I would give you a couple of the more memorable stories to whet your appetites but I'd hate to spoil it for you. I give this book two thumbs up!!!

Mark self published it, so it is (I believe) only availible through him here (you will not be disappointed!):

Thanks for the tip Fran. I know self-publishing can be a huge undertaking so I try to help out anyone who goes that route. I don't have the nerve to risk it.

And this sounds like a great read!

I've spoken to Mark prior to this publication and if you have the readership that he does, it is almost worth the risk as all the money is yours.

There are some mentions of german para troops but remember this is a book on the 101st, so 90% of the text is on them. There are 20ish photos but I cannot remember if there are any of Germans, mostly of the US Paratroopers that you read about in the text.

I am not too sure if you could have seen this book as it was just published and started being sold by the author within the past month...say 6/30/06.

Who do I like more? I guess if I had to answer honestly, I'd say my reading focus was German now. It does not really matter if they were Fallsch., Panzer or SS as long as I am interested in the book. I have read numerous books on the US paratroopers in Normandy...I think 3 from Bando alone and others...I enjoy getting the perspective from both sides.

I also enjoy a good read on US Special Operations in Vietnam and the US Civil War.

Any Civil War authors you really like? Outside my interest but my father enjoys the American Civil War.

I am not an 'author' driven reader usually but 'topic' driven. The book really has to move me. Some titles that come to mind are:

                    - "The Young Lions: Confederate Cadets at War"
                    - "Debris of Battle" (about the wounded left behind @ Gettysburg)
                    - "Nathan Bedford Forrest: A Biography"

I have read this book and it is EXCELLENT!

There are many stories, funny, sad, horriffic, gruesome and interesting. This is the first time to my knowledge that someone has actually written a book like this and I am glad for it. Some of the names have been cleverly changed to protect the identities of some of the men that were involved. This has provided me with an oportunity to do more research to try and put their real nameS to the story.

There is an interesting story about a Fallschirmjager joining one group of U.S. paratroopers and even going so far as sticking his head under a poncho with the rest of the guys to get the low down on things.

For all the BoB fans out there, there is plenty of mention in the book about some of the action that E/506 was involved in. Including stories about a certain "Lt. Lance".

If you have an interest in the Airborne then you definetely should not miss this book! It gives you the inside knowledge that only many years of research could get you. IF YOU WERE LUCKY!

Five out of five for this masterpiece!
