    The Fall of France

What a brilliant book! I just loved it. If you are looking for a day to day account of the battles of May 1940 with stories of soldiers doing heroic deeds....this is NOT it! Although this does include a few chapters on the fighting itself, it really concentrates on the polical side of the French debacle as well as the ineptitude of her Generals and tries to find deep-rooted reasons for it all. It also looks briefly at the resulting Vichy era and goes as far as the time of De Gaulle's presidency in the 1960's. If you are interested in that time of the French history, it is well worth reading. I shall read it again soon! ISBN 0-19-280550-9. GBP8.99 in paperback.
