    Timewatch

Not sure if this programme has been mentioned here before, apologies if it has. Last night an episode called Through hell for Hitler, part of the well known Timewatch series was shown on a local Irish station. I assume it was originally aired on the BBC several years ago. Anyway it was about this German panzer veteran who moved to England after the war and was recounting his experiences on the Russian front. Parts of his story were re-enacted and quite well done. He was extremely honest (surprisingly) and spoke of gunning down surrendering Russians soldiers, being cowardly, abandoning wounded comrades etc.... It was a very good programme and I must say really got the hairs standing up on the back of the neck.

I did a quick google search and found this article about the veteran

Hi Des, I have seen this one several times as it has been shown on the UK TV History channel a few times. It is a very good documentary. I must say I found it rather sad. He was obviously haunted by all the things he did and saw.

      Cheers, Ade.

        A voyage of discovery.

I have seen Herr Mettlemann taking in serveral documenteries including "Through Hell for Hitler" .
It was not unlike his own voyage of discovery to find out all that he had been told about raccial superority , the right to take from other nations and the infalibility of the Fuhrer were all lies.
His time spent in the Russian village with the broken down tank , that he found that the Russian people were human just like himself was a real eye openner to him.

True he saw too much and has his own ghosts. A brave man to tell it as it was and as it is , worthy of our respect and understanding.
