    Books On American Civil War

    hi guys.
    I am looking for help in finding what is the best book that deals with the American Civil War,specificaly what caused it.
    Any help would be appreciated.

    Try Battle Cry of Freedom by James McPherson (ISBN 0-19-515901-2). There is a nice illustrated version that just came out a few years ago that replaced the first edition. I have both but like the newer illustrated version better. Another good account to check out is the one by Shelby Foote entitled "The Civil War- A Narrative". Once again, there is a nice illustrated version of this series (about 12+ volumes) that was done recently and there is the original trilogy. You can sometimes find either of these books at a discounted book store or website or maybe even at a Borders book shop near you. There are other books like the Time Life Series (about 18+ volumes) to recommend but I'd start with the two I mentioned. These are two solid recommendations that I doubt another student of the War will refute. Happy reading!
