The technical quality of the CD is wonderfully good... [A]n attractive production of historical value that can certainly be recommended.
Product Description
This twenty-five-track CD compilation presents the marches, tattoos, anthems and "Vaterlandslieder" that animated the German Empire of the Hohenzollern Emperors from 1871 to 1918, with period performances by the bands of the elite guard regiments of the Prussian Army, German soldiers’ choruses and leading classical artists of what has been called "the jewel era of German history", the Wilhelmian era. The archival source recordings assembled for this compilation date from 1903 to 1915 and have been painstakingly restored and reengineered to maximize the surprising degree of fidelity already inherent to them without altering their unique period ambience in any way whatsoever. The resulting sound quality is characterized by a richness and fullness that until recently were hardly considered obtainable from such early recordings.
On this album, listeners will experience the sounds of the actual fifers, drummers, bandsmen and vocalists of the Kaiser’s Germany and rediscover many long-forgotten treasures of German military music, all preserved exactly as recorded in the confident years of peace and prosperity which defined the German Empire’s golden age of a century ago. As an added bonus, "Gott, Kaiser, Vaterland" also includes a lavish, twenty-page illustrated insert booklet that features a detailed discussion of German military music and its role in the history of the German Empire.
