    Turnip Greens and Sergeant Stripes

I just noticed that Robin Lumsden posted an address for rare books.
Imagine my surprise when I pulled up a very rare book that is,without question, the funniest(and non P.C.)book EVER written..
It's by First Sergeant Grimes of the Alamo Scouts, that tough bunch who were very much involved with the Cabanutan Prison Camp raid.....
I first became aware of this book back in the 70's when my aunt gave me a copy.
It seems that our family lawyer(Sidney Tison,Hartsville,S.C.) was the unit commander during the war.And the book was, partially, dedicated to Sidney by his former "First Shirt."
1/sgt. Grimes writes about growing up during the Great Depression as a poor boy in Alabama. Some of his youthful scrapes are hilarious.
He writes about the Highlander Folk School;a place eventually closed down because of its overt homage to Stalin's "Mother Russia"
Not surprisingly,Grimes gets kicked out of this "poor boy's proletariat "training ground(some notables attended this place,a fact generally hidden today)Grimes was too much of an "American"to swallow the line taught there...
He goes on into the Army and even killing his first Jap was written with humor.
(Sidney Tison told me that Grimes played down his own heroism in battle very much.)
If you have a sense of humor, are Southern born, and like non P.C.;I highly recommend it.Grimes did'nt think too much of "Yankees",however...
    But it's extremely rare.
Once while rereading it during a test I was giving I had to leave the room in laughter-and that was AFTER previously reading it several times!
    Anyone else seen it?
