    Winter War documentary on PBS

    Hello folks,
This week in Arizona on our local PBS station is a documentary on the Winter War between the USSR and Finland called Fire and Ice. Has anyone seen it? I am rather excited about it and will tape it for my students. There is so little on this very interesting and brutal chapter of WWII.
    Regards,
    Jody

    Jody,
there is also "Scandinavia - The Forgotten Front" on dvd as well, and also a finish made film called "the winter war" (Talvisota) which is in finish with English subs.

I have a few copy's of both, but you are right it seems to be a forgotten part of WW2 when it comes to documentaries
    cheers
    Gary

I've been trying to see if PBS HD is carrying it. Unfortunately the TV Guide doesn't list shows on PBS HD. I see when it is on regular PBS...but as a capitalist the idea of "public television" doesn't sit well with me! So I can only watch PBS if it is in high definition. I can look past the liberal aspect if it looks really good!

Version shown by PBS is the short version

        Jody,
The version of "Fire and Ice" shown by PBS is the short 56 minute version. The Directors Cut is almost 80 minutes long and has a good number of interviews and interesting battle information. You can read more about the movie at the http://www.fireandicemovie.com website.

Also, if you are interested in Finnish Winter War history, visit the website http://www.kevos4.com which has hundreds of wartime photos and stories written by Finnish historians and U.S. Reenactors.

Several of us from the Finnish reenacting group, along with some of the reenactors in Finland and Russia, wrote some special articles for PBS and the affiliate station in Indianapolis - http://www.wfyi.org/fireandice/ Be sure to check them out also. There are some great articles there that can't be found anywhere else.

There are many English language books about the Winter War. 3 of the best are "A Frozen Hell" by William Trotter, "Winter War" by Eloise Engle and Lauri Paananen, and "Winter War" by Antti Tuuri. You can find these at the KevOs4 website or at almost all the bookstores like Borders and Barnes and Nobles.

If you need any articles off the KevOs4 website for your students, you are welcome to use the material for teaching purposes.
        Best regards,
        Marshall
