    ss Ranklists

You can pick up reprintsof SS ranklists up to 1939. I think Bill Shea has the 1937 one for $40 now. Check with Detlev too.
Also, there is a mini-roster called The Last levy" by Antonio Munoz that lists SS unit commanders as of 3/1945. I have partially indexed it based on earlier SS Ranklists and awards book and other sundry items. It's an on-going project.
Also, last year there was advertised an SS officers file CD. Did anybody ever get this?
Lastly, the Navy Ranklists are far more extensive-as Rick can tell you. They go back, complete I think, from 1921-1939.
    Cheers,
    JeMc

        Hi Denis:
There is also a shorter SS list from 1942. I think it covers Ranks 05s-Himmler. Its for sale at www.Brandenburghistorica.com.
There are 3 books detailing the careers of SS Einsatzgruppen Officers and other sundry types: The Field Men, The Camp Men and The Camp Women. Useful for biographical information and in some cases, some arcane award information. For example, I did not know that KVKs were awarded for genocidal acts and that one can trace these awards by the weekly "award summary list" for each Abteilung-which are still on file in the Bundesarchives.
Lastly, there is also a 3 volume set @1939 for Police senior officers-glenn has volume 2. It's also a GOLDMINE of information.

          The

          SS-Brigadeführer

          1933 – 1945

          by

          Michael D. Miller

          & Andreas Schulz

          Foreword

The field of research into Hitler’s Schutzstaffel has been an interest of mine since I was a young schoolboy. I am a product of the post-war generation who grew up in the decades immediately following the greatest conflict this world has witnessed. In the classroom, the subject of the dreaded SS was confined to the peripheral and written off with phrases such as “beasts, murderers, devils, etc.”; in many cases justified. The question was always asked, “How could ordinary family men carry out these ghastly crimes?”, but nobody bothered to answer and nobody ever informed the reading public that there was possibly another side to the SS. The subject was taboo. It was in this restricted atmosphere that I began to delve into the history of Hitler’s trusted political army.

I was pleased to discover that I was not alone in my interest and slowly, but surely, I began to find chapters and very occasionally a whole book written on my subject, the personalities behind the story. My interest turned to serious research and I began to travel to foreign parts in order to gain access to the secrets held in the treasures of archives. Not only was this time consuming, but very expensive and consequently my research spanned many years. Added to this was the joyful addition of eastern archival holdings to the free world of research. More travel; more expense.

Then an event occurred which revolutionised the whole field of research and writing…the internet. Suddenly, as if by magic, a new world opened up and people in various parts of the globe could share information, hitherto unavailable. Books, although retaining their importance, were no longer essential. Knowledge could be obtained at the press of a button and a few taps upon a keyboard. The advent of the CD-Rom has catapulted historical investigation into the 21st century and has become as important as books when they first appeared in mediaeval times.

Two fine researchers in my field of interest, Michael Miller and Andreas Schulz, have capitalised upon this phenomena and produced a first in an area of thus far untapped knowledge. In their fine study, “The SS-Brigadeführer 1933-1945”, they provide little known facts about the men who held the lower General rank in the SS and the pool from which future generations of higher SS leaders would be selected. A must for any serious researcher, whether new or old to the field of the Schutzstaffel, this study, had it been available in my earlier years, would have saved me many hours of sifting through files to discover small snippets of interest in order to attempt to answer the “ordinary family men” question. I thank them for their efforts and I commend their excellent work to the world of future historians.

          Max Williams

          Introduction

This CD-Rom presents, in a table format, the most basic details of the lives and service of all who held the rank of SS-Brigadeführer, instituted on 19 May 1933. It is intended as a reference guide for researchers, militaria collectors, and others who seek the following information:

          Name

          Date and Place of Birth

          Date and Place of Death

NSDAP membership number (and entrance date)

SS membership number (and entrance date)

          Promotions

Decorations & Awards (and dates received, if that information is available)

Because most of the terminology used here is German, the reader may wish to consult the two glossaries provided (one for German military and political terminology, the other for German military, political, and civil decorations and awards). These are general-purpose glossaries that contain many more terms than are found in the text. Original German terms are used for all military and political ranks (e.g.- SS-Standartenführer [Colonel] and Gauleiter [Regional Leader of the NSDAP]).

Dates are rendered in European fashion (day/month/year) and in numeric format as follows: 01.01.1933 (i.e. 1 January 1933, or January 1, 1933).

For a detailed examination of the regional organization of the SS, listing all SS-Oberabschnitte, Abschnitte, and Standarten as well as HSSPF and SSPF commands, I strongly recommend Mark C. Yerger’s Allgemeine SS: The Commands, Units and Leaders of the General SS (Schiffer Military History, Atglen, PA, 1997).

For those seeking more detailed information on the lives and careers of senior SS and German Police officers, I strongly recommend the excellent Die Generale der Waffen-SS und Polizei, Band I (A – G) by Andreas Schulz and Günther Wegmann (published by Biblio-Verlag). Additionally, I am working on the multi-volume series Leaders of the SS & German Police (to be published by Roger James Bender). Volume I of that series, scheduled for release in 2005, will cover all officers in the ranks of Reichsführer-SS through SS-Gruppenführer from “A” through “G”.

Finally, I encourage the reader to contact me with any corrections, additional information, or comments. Greatly appreciated would be assistance in the form of additional, documented biographical information and/or photographs of any officer who held the rank of SS-Standartenführer and above. Similarly sought are information and photos of non-SS officers of the German Police who held comparable rank.
