My wife and I just completed watching the whole series, almost in tangem this last month. I have the boxed video set for Winds of War but not War and Remembrance. Story line is good most of the actors, Robert Mitchum, Sir John Gielgud, Jane Seymour, Topol and many others. But the actors who played Hitler(2), Goering(2) Kietel and Jodl were almost like comic book character. Ali McGraw (Natalie) must have the life achievement as the most ham-fisted actress ever.
I can understand a Mini-series on such a large scale produced many challenges with sets and logistics you can understand the use of modern day warships due to the lack of war-era ships, this can be overlooked. But being a medals/uniform guy found many errors in the uniforms. It seemed that every Naval officer had a Navy Cross. Victor Henry had a Bronze Star ribbon during the pre war era. Bryon Henry near the end of the series was a Lt Commander but was wearing a hat that worn by Commanders and above.
One thing that confuses me and this was consistent in the War and Remembrance that they were wearing their qualification badge (submariner, aviator wings) below the ribbons! I have never seen that before in pictures, regs or whatever.
But for the average bloke who is watching the story doesn't always see that but this is the second time in two years we've watched them and my eyes start to wander around the scene and start noticing these little off details, annoys the heck out of my wife when I point out HE's WEARING THE WRONG HAT
Anyway I still love the series and looking forward to reading the books again this winter (been about twenty years).
