Great WWII books on Normandy for kids!

    Great WWII books on Normandy for kids!

    Hi guys,
    I guess these books are not really aimed for kids, but they are pamphlet style (they are referred to as mini-guides) with many color pictures, color drawings, color maps, and items of militaria. The books are 35 pages long and each one gives a brief history of its area of content. I feel they are ideal for young readers without getting them bogged down with too many facts and or details. These books are pretty much straight forward and are presented in a rather stylish and flashy way.

    These books are not for serious students of military history, but I find them ideal for kids and or young adults. I bought two complete sets one for my 3 year old son (now he has some more reading material when he gets to 4th grade) and one for my classroom (I teach 10th grade World History). BTW, my high school kids really seem to like them.

    These books are from the same publisher (Histoire & Collections) that did the rather well known books on German and Allied uniforms of WWII.

    These mini-guides are worth checking out. I purchased them at the Borders book store, near my home. I paid $4.95 a piece for them (plus I got a 20% discount off of them for being a teacher).

      I was inspired by Jody's post to buy the complete set for my 5th Grade son as a birthday present. The books came yesterday, and I am very impressed with them! Very well done IMO, and just right for young adults. In fact they won't get wrapped up until Dad, ummm, "previews" them first

        I am so glad you bought them. I was afraid no one was going to give them a second thought.

        As a child I am sure you were into those Ballantine war books (I sure was). Some of those books had blue bands, some had red bands, some had orange bands, etc. Those books ran the gauntlet from discussing the Jeep, to the 1936 Olympic Games.

        These new Normandy books reminded me a lot of those classics. Of course the lay-out, color images and construction, makes the Normandy mini-guides superior in my opinion (with the exception of the Ballantime books SS and Nazi Regalia). They are very flashy and really appeal to the eye. I still have a soft spot for those old Ballantines, and I still collect them as well.

        Tell your son Happy Birthday! BTW, which of the mini-guides do you prefer? I like The German Defeat.

          Jody, I'm still looking thru them. I like them all though so far . YES, I was into those ballantine books and still have the "regalia" ones somewhere. Also the WWII magazine series...can't recall the name, but I think it had a sprinting German soldier in it's logo. I bought every one of those. Funny, last year I was at a flea market in San Diego and someone was selling the entire series of those ballantine books...a couple fruit boxes full. I almost bought them just for old time sake, but had no way to get them home...

            The magazine you refer to are the History of the Second World War. The first series had 96 issues to them. I have all of them too in those fancy smancy binders. It had a German soldier being shot.

            I wonder if that guy did offer you the entire series of Ballantine books. The reason being, I have 5 computer paper boxes filled with them, and I still don't have them all. I would like a list of them, because some even dealt with WWI. Those dang books seem to be endless.

            At the SOS last year I bought 23 of them (Ballantine books), and it was a bear to get them home.

            BTW, I also have the WWII cards from the 70's. They are the size of a large recipe card and were housed in a green plastic tray. They also had the same German getting shot on them as part of their logo. Do you remember those?

              Jody, they were BIG boxes stuffed full of them. The tag said complete, but I really didn't count them or anything. Yep, I remember those cards too!!
