The Jew with the Iron Cross

My husband and I are in the process of publishing his memoir of WWII, entitled"The Jew with the Iron Cross." Although his Jewish maternal line is unbroken, according to Hitler's rule book Georg was 1/4 Jewish, therefore he was drafted and sent to the Russian Front in 1943. There he participated in the agony of the retreats, the awful Russian winter and much more. In the summer of 1944 he was captured by the Russians on the River Prut, and force marched back to Kiev, where he remained a prisoner of war until Oct. 1945. As a prisoner, he was recruited to be a Russian spy against the Germans. During most of this time, Georg's mother was hiding Jews in their attic in Vienna.

The book, based on 84 original letters sent to his mother from the Russian trenches, and illustrated with photos and drawings from the letters sent from the trenches, includes many little-known details of daily life at the front, of how the soldiers survived (or didn't), of battles, and of the prisoner of war experience. The story of how Georg was awarded his Iron Cross is one of many exciting tales.

Since we are self publishing the book with iUniverse, I am writing to ask if any of you have any suggestions of how we can best market this book over the Internet. It will be listed on Amazon.com and Barnes and Noble, but I would like to contact as many additional sources as possible myself, by Googling WWII, Jewish History, perhaps German and Austrian sites. I will be very appreciative of any help you can give me, Thank you. Oh, you may read the first chapter of the book on: www.georgrauch.com Regards, Phyllis Rauch

Yes, perhaps the "Books" Forum is a better place for this.

You also might want to contact Schiffer Books and see if they might want to publish the book. I know a few people who have self published and for the vast majority it has not been a good experience.

Requesting forum input on our book title/Jew with the Iron Cross

We are having some second thoughts re the title of our yet to be published book. I like it because it is true, snappy, and gives you a feeling for who, when, where. (WWII, Europe, holocaust, etc.) We are now wondering, though, whether it could be a turn-off for various groups of people. Of course you haven't read the book yet, but I'd appreciate any thoughts people might have as to their general response to the title. Thank you.

To Raymond: Thanks for your input. Georg is 81 and one reason I've decided to go with self-publishing is that I'd like to see the book become a reality in his lifetime!! Self-publishing has become relatively inexpensive, it's fast, the author retains all rights, and there's always the possibility that a "real publisher" could pick it up later.

Advantages of having a publisher do your book;more copies are available...
Disadvantages;you will have very little money to show for it,book by book sales(unless a best seller)

Advantages of self-publishing;you can write what you please, without having to "clear" it with a publisher...
You will not be edited by a publisher...
You will realize 100% profits(less print costs, mailing)if not shared with a big publisher...
I wrote a book(limited interest ,"snipers") and know that self-publishing was the way to go in that case.
A friend of mine had a publisher print two books he wrote and he was telling me recently how he wished he had self-published his own work as he only gets a pittance(royalties)for his efforts.
