In the 1960s, ABC presented a three night special entitled The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich, produced by David Wolper, whose archive is currently at USC, where the full film is available to view upon special request. MGM put it on videotape in a shortened edited version and a shortened version is available on DVD. Shirer is filmed commenting on the period.
The original had the film of the marchpast of the SS LAH before Hitler standing in his Mercedes on his 50th birthday, which was impressive. That sequence has been left out of all available video and DVD edited versions. Some decades ago I went to the National Archives with an appointment to see and locate this footage and learned that its copy of the footage had been destroyed in the fire at the National Archives. I have searched video documentaries for years and have yet to see this footage ever again. Does anyone know where this film footage can be seen other than having to travel to California to USC to view the entire film of Wolper's Rise and Fall of the Third Reich?
