The last movie I saw him in was terrible, the one with him as the Capt. of a cargo ship.

Tom Hanks isn't doing so well. He manage to escape The Somali's, contracted Coronavirus and now he's trying to fend off The Germans. And a little Fun fact: after his boat sinks, Tom Hanks takes a life raft and floats to a nearby island and befriends a volleyball

I just saw "Cruel Sea", a British movie from 1952. One of the best WW2 sea war themed movies after a fantastic novel.
I hope that "Greyhound" would be a comparable movie of the US Navy part.

Yes, indeed, both the novel and movie were quite good.
I don't hold out much hope for " Greyhound" though, at lease based upon the ludicrous scenes in the previews.
Also, Tom Hanks at 64 is far too old to be playing a lieut. commander in this film.

A surfaced U-Boat passing a surface vessel as close as that, I'm surprised that there wasn't hand-to-hand combat with cutlasses! No doubt the Kriegsmarine will be portrayed as either total imbeciles/fanatical Nazis - I've seen more than enough to wait for it to come on telly.

                  WARNING - SPOILERS...!!!

Well, I managed to sit through this last night and went into it with low expectations which was just as well.

The attempt at haunting music each time the U-boats appear sounds more like a whale trying to give birth... This set the scene
for this flick... Not to mention the U-boats surfacing at will close to Allied shipping and more often than not the escorts, with
might I add, nobody to be seen on the conning tower on lookout...

The only time you do see any U-boat crew is when they are dueling it out with the Greyhound (US destroyer) and an English escort.
With the U-boat outgunned by what seems like 50 to 1, they still seem to deal out more damage to both ships before the GH can
                  land a decisive blow.

The cherry on top of it all is the commander of the Wolf emblazoned U-boat who seems to be able to tap into whatever frequency
the Greyhound speaker system is on... On several occasions boasting / taunting of how he is going to deal death and carnage to
the convoy and in particular the Greyhound and each time signing off with an even more pathetic wolf howl....Cringe!!!

In all seriousness, I can't recall a film where I rolled my eyes more....

If your after realism and a good story line, this movie ain't it...

If your after mindless actions sequences and a film loaded with CGI and don't care about realism, then this is for you.

I watched this a couple of days ago and didn't expect a great deal so I wasn't really disapointed, but couldn't stop wondering why the production team and writers insisted on ridiculous scenes bordering on being totally illogical.

For me, this is now up there with 'Fury' and 'U-571'.
Always looking for Luftwaffe Kampfflieger related document groups. In particular anything to Kampfgeschwader 2.

I watched it last night and would agree with this synopsis. I would add that the love interest piece is beyond dull and adds nothing to the story. I ended up caring more for the convoy ships getting attacked than Greyhound's crew because you didn't get to know them aside from Tom Hanks character. An odd movie.

                          Regards,

I viewed this film last Friday, courtesy of KarlS, and while prepared to dislike it, I came away pleasantly surprised.
I would confess to being a real stickler for authentic detail in war movies, which is of course sadly lacking in most, and I noticed a few here, but not enough to stop me from enjoying most of the movie.
Hanks is of course, at 64, far too old to be playing a commander, especially his initial scene as a lieut. commander. Also, no ribbons on his tunic at that rank & age?
It would also have been unlikely to see a Fletcher class destroyer on convoy duty in mid or late 1942, as the first of the class wasn't commissioned until June 30, 1942. They had the surviving USS Kidd to use in many scenes, so that I understand.
The movie, save the early scene with Hanks & his girlfriend, is pretty much non stop action for it's 1 1/2 hours length. Yes, the absurd wolf painted on one of the U-boat conning towers and the radio threats were hard to swallow, but I thought the battle scenes were overall compelling.
"Greyhound" is not the caliber of "The Cruel Sea", or maybe not even "The Enemy Below", but, IMHO, it's worth viewing and then making up your own mind.
