If you can't buy it, build it

    Hi Together,

Probably not the modelling as you expected to see.

Since a very long time i admire the highest of all Romanian orders.
    Order of Carol I.

Of course as it's very rare so it's very expensive.

So what to do when you still want to have at least a copy ?

Build it in 3D and let make a 3D-print.
Well, first things first and that's building.

when printed it will be necessary to add a lot of details to the feathers.

    Any comments welcome
    Robert

Forgot to show how it should/will look when the modelling is finished.
As all the original pieces are handmade there is allmost none which looks like another.
As you see on the 3d-model the wings look different, that's because i took another as master then the one original below.

Very intriguing idea and it looks like you are to a good start with your 3D model. The real one is certainly a wonderful example of craftsmanship.

I'm glad you like what it so far.
I will mark the order clearly as a repro on the backside, never know.

        Came a bit further today.
The eagles head i will keep for the end as it's the most difficult part.

Like allways positiv and negativ comments welcome.

        Greetings
        Robert

Worked this evening on the crown.
Tommorrow want to finish the medalion on the rear and if it's enough time to start with king Carols portrait on the front medallion.

You are a very talented 3D artist. What program are you using to develop your design?

                Thanks David.

                I use Rhino-3D, it's a nurbs-base program.
Pretty good for organic shapes like the portait and the eagles head.
Even all details could be done in 3d, but as you see on the feathers, script-roll and legs they are somehow bulky with sharp edges.
I did it this way because i want to carve many details manually on the 3d-printed master.
It will look much more realistic when carved manually.

                Greetings
                Robert

Finished this weekend the medallion on the back.
As i wasn't happy with the crown i started over from zero and made it new. Like it much better now.

Next step is now the portrait of King Carol I. on the front medallion.

                    Greetings

Very cool and interesting idea. I wonder what other rare medals could be done. Are you doing this to the original size?

Any kind of medal could be done. And yes, the master will be printed 1:1 to original size.

But only in 3D, i know from another expirement, wont look as good as possible.
I am sure the trick will do the manual carving on the printed master.
Here another example i did a few months ago, it's printed in original size.
Order of the Romanian crown breaststar.
Left 3D / right printed 3D in original size

Did this evening the medaillon in front with King Carols portrait.
I took a copy of the actual portrait, then painted it completely in gray.
After that beganto paint the raised face areas with lighter greys and the recessed areas with darker greys.
Then loaded that painted portrait into the 3D program and made a highfield from this bitmap.
It's something like creating a reliefmap in which lighter areas get raised more then darker areas.
It still will be necessary to carve/smooth a bit the portrait on the master. But that will be a easy task.

Now onto the most difficult part, the eagles head.
That will be a challenge for me on this piece.

                          Greetings

Looks amazing! Is there any finishing to do after you print it? Like the emaille?
Can't wait to see the finished piece!

                            Best regards,

                            Mats

                              The 3D modelling is finished.
Now need to look for a company who can print it in 3D.
Then have to carve the 3D-printed master manually.
Doing a mould in Silicon and making a resin-cast.

Will post the next time when i get the printed master.

                              Any comment welcome.
