        One question,what was the purpose of the red hull paint on the turret tops? It seems like that would make the ship a better target! I notice the fleet at Pearl Harbor reportedly had their turrets painted red on top the day it was attacked. I realize the national colors on the bow and stern were to avoid friendly fire from above.

          I think it had do do with recognition by plane. At that early point it was not yet clear how dangerous planes will be. But I might be wrong.
