    Help with U801

I want to build a model of the U801. She was a type uboatsxi.jpg Type IXC/40. I am however struggling to find the right kit as there seems to be different versions of this Type. I was thinking the middle one would be right?

I was thinking this kit would work, but on period photos of her sinking she seems to have the bigger turret. It is also mentioned that she had the main gun 105, 37mm and 20mm flak. Some guys here seem to know the ins and out of t u-801_surfaced.jpg Please advise. Thanks Jacques.

          Hello Jacquesf,

I'm just in the process of researching the Type IX C and the Type IX C/40 U-Boat... Check out the following link...

          http://www.uboatarchive.net/U-801A/U-801INT.htm

I believe U-801 looks to be a Type IX C/40 U-Boat and not a Type IX C as listed in the USN Report, but the report is most likely correct about the bridge type and the fact that no schnorchel was present. There was a difference in the fuel oil tanks between the Type IX C and the Type IX C/40. See my drawings...

If you have other questions; I may be of some help???

          Kind regards,
          Don_

Don, Thanx for the info. Very interesting. If you look at the fist pic I posted, would the u801 be a combination of the boat on the left, with the tower/bridge of the middle boat? I am considering building the version describing in the report , with the 105mm gun and flakvierling still present, would that be accurate and , if I use the Revell 1:72 model kit ( pictured last above)?

Jacques, I think your correct and most likely the cannons on the deck would not be there like the model you posted... Good luck with your model and post some photos...
