WW2 German Waffenrocks - Where to start

I'm looking to piece together a parade uniform, but I know very little about Waffenrocks, such as when they were used and what they were worn with. I know that they went into storage when the war broke out and that soldiers would hire them out for special occasions (weddings, christenings and such like), but besides that their use doesn't seem to be that well documented. I imagine Officers of a certain standing could afford to buy their own Waffenrock's and have them altered by a local tailor or seamstress, but I'm just going off what I've heard over the years.

Please feel free to correct me if I've not got any of the above information correct. I'd just like to learn more about this fascinating piece of clothing.

Any recommendations for where I can buy quality tailor made reproductions of Waffenrocks would be greatly appreciated.

    Henry

Here’s some info from the book “Feldbluse” that should help. As to where to get a reproduction there’s only one place I know of.

    Hope that helped

Their use is well documented and I would start before buying a uniform by purchasing this book, written by two WA forum members-

      Amazon UK-

          Henry,

For what you would pay for a repro you can almost buy a very run of the mill, but original Waffenrock from the right seller.

They're great items to collect and fortunately reasonably hard to mess around with so the majority of ones on the market may only have a replaced eagle and one or two badge loops added.

Best wishes as you delve into that field of study

There's a couple of repros on UK ebay right now.

I agree with Bob; don't debase your collection with a repro.

They're extremely attractive and illustrate the high level of skilled tailoring and needlework at that time.

One of the authors, Timothy Curley, is a WAF member.

Yes I need to get in contact with Tim, I’ve heard he’s also an expert on summer tunics and I’d like to get his opinion on one I might buy.

+100 That's what I would have suggested had Johnny not taken care of it.

I have done business with and met the authors at SOS. Fine gentlemen.

Naval & Military Press is currently selling the volume at a discount. I don't know how this compares to other sales sites.

I'd just like to thank everyone for their input on this subject. Your comments have given me much food for thought. Although I would love to own an original, my intention is to purchase a Waffenrock that I can wear on the odd occasion, and I certainly couldn't or wouldn't do that to an original Waffenrock. I will look towards Hessen Antique for a quality reproduction, and maybe in the future I'll purchase an original Waffenrock purely as a display piece.

Thanks once again everyone; feel free to keep the conversation going, the more information and advice the merrier!
