    Kaserne Outside Frankfurt-Edwards?

    Hi Folks:

We were out driving around Frankfurt this weekend and ran into this "old" Kaserne in the northern part of Frankfurt above the "old" 97th Gen Hospital. I think this was "Edwards" but I never went to this base when I was working in Germany from 1980-90. It is now the Kaserne/base for the Bundes Polizei

It has symbols/stone showing various army hats/helmets and weapons on each building.

I'm sure that someone can ID this kaserne and set me straight. Thanks,

        Drake Edwards Kaserne

Good afternoon...looks like Drake-Edwards Kaserne. I was stationed there from Oct 82 through June 86. Headquarters of the 3rd Armored Division.
        Very Respectfully

          COLBILL (Assuming COL Bill)…..

Thank you for clarifying Drake-Edwards Kaserne….I'm sure that you are more aware of the installation than I am since I was up in Giessen and you were indeed stationed there.

From one vet to another...."THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVE!"

Very cool. I was just up the A5, stationed at Ray Barracks in Friedberg.

The stone carvings look familiar but I could have seen similar at another Kasern.

And thank-you for yours. Yeah, we had the Elvis barber shop too. Elvis' barber was in semi-retirement by my time, but still had the full Elvis display at his station behind his chair.

Yes, I knew Giessen due to the reasons you mentioned. Had to go there for many of the amenities like PX, Commissary, auto-parts store, etc. I actually had the great luck of being put in the housing area in Butzbach. The Kaserne was closed but the former Wehrmacht housing area was still being used and that's where I got stuck. The housing area right outside the gate of Ray Barracks did not have enough capacity so a lot of us got the pleasure of a 45 minute drive each way to work.

                  Edelweiss and all:
It was a good time. 3AD from 82~86. The division was dispersed from Frankfurt, Butzbach, Gelnhausen, Friedberg, Buyzbach, KG etc.
                  Very Respectfully

Ah yes, Giessen and Butzbach. I was on The Rock (Ayers Kaserne) from 1979-1982 and lived in Butzbach housing (this was post-war construction, not Wehrmacht). Had to go to Giessen to the PX and Commissary, but if we wanted to go to GOOD facilities, we got on the Autobahn and went to Frankfurt or Rhein-Main. All of that stuff is closed now and The Rock buildings were all torn down (except the Chapel) for a German Gewerbegebiet.
I wish the Germans would allow the public into Ray Barracks more than just once a year during the Elvis Festival.
