    Yamamoto / Pyle

    On 18 April 1943 Admiral Yamamoto was shot down near Bougainville in the Solomon Islands and in 1945 famous US war correspondent Ernie Pyle was killed on Ie Shima near Okinawa.

    The Yamamoto interception was one of the more remarkable missions of the Pacific war.

        When I was at Okinawa I wanted to go to Ie Shima but it was Off Limits at the time due to unexploded ordnance and poisonous snakes.

          My dad has Ernie Pyles cigarette lighter that he had on him the day he was killed.
