Sheffield flypast: US Bomber-crash crew honoured on 75th anniversary

We won't forget those guys who came over with their silk stockings and gum!

"Thousands of people cheered a flypast honouring 10 airmen who died when their plane crashed in a park 75 years ago.

The US bomber came down in Endcliffe Park, Sheffield on 22 February 1944, killing everyone on board."

The 10 men killed in the crash:

Pilot Lt John Kriegshauser, pilot from Missouri
2nd Lt Lyle Curtis, co-pilot from Idaho
2nd Lt John Humphrey, navigator from Illinois
    Melchor Hernandez, bombardier from California
Harry Estabrooks, engineer and gunner from Kansas
    Charles Tuttle, gunner from Kentucky
Robert Mayfield, radio operator from Illinois
Vito Ambrosio, gunner from New York

Good post to read, sad reason, but great they have been honoured.

Pleased that the UK media has picked up on this and given it very high-profile exposure to boot that it deserves.

Also very pleased to see the excellent turnout of the public to witness the flypast.

      Regards Richard.
Always looking for Luftwaffe Kampfflieger related document groups. In particular anything to Kampfgeschwader 2.

Absolutely right - the sacrifice these guys made plus the 1000's more should never be forgotten.Very brave USAF crew.

So important that they are not forgotten. Really good to see that this crew finally got the flypast that Tony Foulds had been campaigning for.

            in the US

The story appeared in the news here this morning showing the large crowd gathered to remember including the fellow who witnessed the crash as a child in the park. Lest we forget.
