    Stalingrad vets

A friend attended a Stalingrad veterens' reunion in Limburg north of Frankfurt/Main on Volkstrauertag 11 November. There is a memorial monument in the cemetery dedicated to those who were at Stalingrad and this year there were two veterans who could attend. The 99 3/4-year-old vet gave a brief talk. The other veteran (age uncertain) did an interview with my friend and included the info that he had been in tanks and got knocked out 7 times, the last one being in a Panther wacked by a J. Stalin 2 with the 122 mm cannon. He showed him the burn scars on the back of his hand. Just in front of the cathedral in Limburg there is another memorial with a copy of the "Madonna of Stalingrad" statue.

It's amazing how these people are still alive to tell us these great stories about one of the biggest events in human history. Hope they still have many years to come.
