NEED ADVICE! Where to stay in Normandy?

Hey everyone, I am going to Normandy next year with some friends. We are trying to spend 3-4 days in WWII important buildings, not just generic hotels.

I am looking for suggestions. We don’t need it to be super nice. We just want something unique! Heck, an old bunker turned into a bed and breakfast sounds perfect.

What are your suggestions and where are they at?

There are many great places there - so I doubt anyone will ever identify "that one great spot" for you . . . but on my visit, we spent a few great days here - and if you have a car, for me, it was probably the most "centered" place we bivouacked.

My wife and I were on Omaha beach this year for the Anniversary and we stayed 2 nights in Bayeux. Its centrally located so it worked best for us. I can't stress enough though how important renting a car is. I had assumed public transportation would be readily available. Unless you want extremely expensive taxi rides, that is not the case.

Thanks for the suggestions. Does anyone have any WWII importance buildings that they suggest? I know we can find great places to stay, but I am really looking to stay in something that has specific history tied to the landings or the fighting in the area.

Buy this book. It contains all the information you could ever want - and more.

And if you happen to stay at the villa in Arromanches I mentioned, you should still be able to find a copy I left behind during my visit, for all future guests to share.

Because of the 75th anniversary next year I hear the entire area is booked already. Assuming you are planning to go around d the 6th of June. You need to make some plans ASAP and be able to stay further away.

I went for the 70th, and had to stay further south for the same reason . Stayed in the town of Bagnoles-de-l'Orne, which is 65 miles south of Caen. A French friend told me to use "booking.com" to find a place, and it worked for me.

I will actually be there in late July/early August! We are doing a re-enactment that centers around Mortain and 30ID’s breakout.

As Sidney has alluded already, Bayeux is a great place to stay, with all landing beaches within easy reach and several sites such as Pegasus Bridge, Merville Battery, St Mere Eglise and Abbey Ardennes also easy to drive to.

I have stayed twice in Bayeux to tour the sites of Normandy and would highly recoomend it.

                  Regards Richard.
Always looking for Luftwaffe Kampfflieger related document groups. In particular anything to Kampfgeschwader 2.
