    Dayton, OH

A friend and I took a field trip up to Dayton, Oh for the day yesterday and I have to say, there are a lot of great historical sites to take in!

We certainly visited the USAF Air Museum - this is probably my 4th time and I still haven't gotten into the last hanger! Finally got to see the Cold War exhibits this time and I'm always impressed with their displays and material.

In reading up on the Manhattan Project recently, I was shocked to learn that there was an important element of research and development on the Polonium trigger system that took place on a number of sites in Dayton.

This is "Unit III", I believe the only remaining standing structure of the project in Dayton. There's a lot of very interesting reading on this and how a Soviet spy in the project basically handed the Soviets their nuclear trigger, which finally came out in the late 90s. Eerie that the lab buildings are now in the middle of a very old run down neighborhood. Per government reports, there are still higher than normal Polonium elements in the sewer system...

Compare against my pic from yesterday...

Strangely enough, this is just several blocks away from the Orville & Wilbur Wright Bicycle shop which is a neat historical complex/museum: https://www.nps.gov/daav/learn/histo...ny-complex.htm

There was also a very interesting element to the Enigma decoding project done in Dayton in tandem with work in the UK: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United...ine_Laboratory

Lastly, there are also a couple great breweries in the area. We went to Carillion Brewing which produces beer in an authentic 1850s process and facility that is very neat to experience!

Next time you are up there, Scott - perhaps you can get in to see the "Little Green Men" of Building 280? I had an opportunity, 20 years ago - when much of that terrible ceiling grid was still left removed . . .
