    Hamburg visit 2018

I have recently been to visit Hamburg for 4 days on my Stag do with a crew of 16 friends. We had a fantastic time. I would recommend the Reeperbahn to anyone who likes large steins of beer and beautiful frauleins.

A small group of us managed to visit the Flak Tower at Heiligengeistfeld. Our taxi driver did not understand what flak tower or flakturm was and ended up taking us to a large telecoms tower in the city. As soon as someone said Bunker he knew what we crazy Englishmen meant and took us straight there.

The scale of this building is impressive even by today’s standards. It could shelter up to 20,000 civilians. Today the building is empty apart from a music teaching school on the top floor. We tried to get up to the roof top but all the doors going upwards were locked, with signs in English as well as German “no access to roof”.

Some great shots there. I was in Hamburg in 1986, unfortunately never had the chance to check out the tower. Just one question, is #5 an actual wartime shot, because it looks like something that might have been done up for a film production or the like?

I think the 2nd pic is a Flakturm in Berlin but would have been same guns on top.

Walked past this old looking building and one of my mates spotted the eagle. How cool is that. They just removed the swastika.

Came accross this statue just near the flaktower. Check out the dates on it.

Flakturm VI also still exists in Hamburg - it has been "remodeled" as an "Energie-Bunker."

There are 6-7 other Luftschutz bunkers of the type you found with the eagle (some of these have eagles still, others not).

Sounds like another trip may be in order!

A little off topic I know and this may have already been posted at sometime but this site is very interesting it shows Nazi eagles on buildings and such still in existence.

and this site too is quite good http://www.warhistoryonline.com/worl...buildings.html, the Nuremberg rally grounds are shown and brings back memories for me as I played a Heavy metal gig there in 1981 it was the German leg of the Monsters of Rock concert (British concert was Donnington Park 1981) AC/DC were headliners and I was the drummer in a British nwobhm band called MORE we were first on the bill I will never forget this place it has an atmosphere you can feel the history in places like this. As I recall there were many US service men at the gig as there was a base nearby maybe you were there Had many opportunities to see lots of historic sights during 2 years of touring Europe with the band but sadly in those days I was usually asleep in the bus during the days recovering from the night before, what an idiot I was then
                          Cheers, Andy.

I do like the first link.

The second page, unfortunately, perpetuates a myth - Berchtesgaden and the Obersalzberg were captured by the U.S. Third Infantry Division on 4 May 1945, not the 101st Airborne or the French 2nd Armored. They both got there later. Who arrived at the actual Kehlsteinhaus first is still hotly debated, with supportable claims by all three units.
They still hold annual rock concerts at the Zeppelinfeld in Nürnberg, but they no longer let the spectators onto the ruins (only in the infield).
I was "there," but not stationed in Nürnberg. My highlight was seeing Led Zeppelin in Frankfurt/Main in 1980.

Two nice buildings, we were there in october , didn't manage to see the flak tower , the building spotted by your friend , now that is a real gem to come across.
Thank you for posting up your photos, Hamburg is a great city to visit.
