        Excavator driver releases huge swastika

It is four by four meters in size and has been in the ground for decades: Under a sports field in Hamburg, a large swastika has been found. A monument is said to have stood on the site of the concrete colossus.

During construction work on a Hamburg sports field, an excavator driver encountered a huge swastika. The excavator had dug a pit for a foundation on the square in Billstedt when he came across the swastika, as the first chairman of the sports club Billstedt-Horn, Joachim Schirmer, said.

The swastika made of concrete is according to the Platzwarts four times four meters large. At the point in the Hein Klink Stadium formerly stood a large monument, said the club chairman. It had been demolished decades ago.

The responsible district head Falko Droßmann (SPD) had set off to the sports field according to a spokeswoman for personal information. The monument protection office had been informed, said the spokeswoman. "It should get away as soon as possible." So should also be prevented that the locality in the future attract "uninvited guests". That could be right-wing supporters as well as teenagers who find it exciting.

The CDU citizens' deputy David Erkalp told the "Bild" newspaper, it was a "horrible Nazi legacy."

According to sports club chairman Schirmer, new dressing rooms were to be built there. During the earthworks, the swastika from the time of National Socialism appeared at a depth of about 40 centimeters.

The find was so big and heavy that the excavator could not move it away, said the club chairman. According to the district spokeswoman, the relict from the Nazi era may not have been destroyed after the war. "You can see that with the bunkers, that they can not always be easily removed." The swastika should now be destroyed with heavy equipment such as jackhammers.
