    Alta and Tromsø

    Hello All,
A friend and I are planning to visit Alta and Tromsø in June this year. Of course the visit will be centred around the Tirpitz, and I’m assuming that we’ll be able to find things like the relevant museums, places to view the where she was sunk (I know there is nothing visible left above water) etc. without too much trouble. But I was wondering if any WAF members might be able to help with information on not-so-obvious points of interest that we might otherwise miss. I’m thinking of things like aircraft crash-sites, etc. etc. We’ve got about a week, so probably plenty of time to explore those areas, but not much to go further afield. Both reasonably fit and used to hiking. Please feel free to post or PM me. Many thanks
    Keith

Didn't 6 German destroyers get chased up one of the fjords and some of them ended up getting beached, permanently??

      Alta and Tromso

One last try to see if maybe some Norwegian members (or others) can help with unusual military sites - or related places of interest - in Tromso or Alta (or in between). Thanks Keith

I seem to recall a documentary about 617 Sqdn and the attacks on Tirpitz and I believe they showed a bomb crater that is still very visible as well as fragments of the Tall Boy bombs.

I think this image on Google Earth shows the bomb crater - using the rough & ready measuring tool on Google Earth it is approx 15m across.

Thanks Hucks216. That's the sort of thing I was hoping for. I realise I may well hear about places like that when I'm there, but all too often you hear about these things afterwards ... "of course you must have seen .... everyone knows about it!" Regards Keith

Tell me about it. I was in Prague last week and had a day walking around the WW-2 sites in the city. It was only after I got back to the UK on Friday that I found out that when I took a coffee break just outside the 'Muzeum' metro station I was less than 500 yards from the former Gestapo HQ, Propaganda Ministry & SA Headquarters!

Try looking for a UK made documentary called 'What The Dambusters Did Next' which has a piece on the Tirpitz raids.

And try this Forum. It is based around Bismarck but also has information on Tirpitz including Then & Now photos of the anchorages...

Exactly right. I was in Krakow a couple of years ago, and ALMOST missed seeing the old Gestapo Headquarters, which has a tiny but still interesting museum and the old cells underneath what is now a youth hostel.

That's why I'm trying to find out anything I can about Tromso and Alta. There seems to be a lot of general stuff out there, but not much detail about the obscure things that must be there.

Thanks for the tips. I'm trying to navigate my way through the website you recommended.
