Verdun - The abandoned battlefield frozen in time

Pretty fascinating article with lots of pics about 100's of square miles on French terrain permanently rendered inhabitable by mass amounts of unexploded ordinance and human remains.

Article says 630 trained men have been killed [in France] since the end of WW2, specifically trying to remove unexploded ordinance, that is crazy, can't imagine the volunteer rate to do such dangerous work is very high.

Also says that 12 million unexploded shells reside in the hills and forests that rise above Verdun alone, and that at the current rate of clearance, they will still be finding shells 900 years from now.

The scale of the intensity of this battle is simply beyond imagination, must have been nothing short of literal sheer hell for both sides.

        .

If they're working in europe the pay is LOW.......compared to the third world.....however, most people love doing EOD, its the same appeal as people who love being pilots, if you can understand what I'm trying to compare it to....

          spelling

In post 1 the terms should read "uninhabitable" and unexploded "ordnance". One or two letters make a world of difference here.
