Vienna Flak Towers visit a long time a coming!

About 35 years ago I was watching a travel show about Vienna presented by that English gentleman traveller Alan Whicker, during the show in the background I could see the silhouette of a Flak tower. Ever since I have wanted to visit them just incase they decide to remove them or convert them. Was in Budapest a few weeks ago so caught a train to Vienna and spent all day walking to all three groups of towers. Was lucky to have very good weather and at this time of year the leaves had all left the trees!
    1. First tower to visit was the only one that is open to the public in the Esterhazy Park which was the L.tower. Now a large aquarium which via an outside staircase it is possible to climb to the top where there is an impressive view of the city and gives a good idea of the very good field of fire that the smaller flak guns would have had. From the top you can look across to it's partnered Gun Tower in the Stifskaserne now used by the Austrian army.

Second group in the Augarten park.

The second pair that I visited were in the Augarten, here was the round tower that I most wanted to see, weather ideal for photography and trees bare. This tower looks in the worst shape of all the towers and has had cables attached to it for what I assume is a form of support.

              L tower.

Impressive though the gun tower shown above is, the L Tower's massive brooding bulk hiding in the wood was very impressive! The sheer size of the massive concrete structure almost breath taking! Well at least to me.

#3.4. Note penertration at the top of the tower where i read that the concrete is thinner.

                      In the park at Arenberg.

Getting towards the end of the afternoon and aware that darkness would arrive soon I found the last pair in this small park.
First up was another impressive L Tower standing very close to it's partnered G Tower.

The Gun tower of a similar design to the tower in Hamburg that I visited some years ago, this only leaves the ruined Flak towers in Berlin for me to visit to complete the set.

                            Room with a view!

In that last picture, not much of a view from the building on the right unless you're a bunker fan!

Glad you made it, Hans - that was one trip, well worth the effort! Thanks for taking the photos.
