Great story! Other GI Jewish POWs were not so lucky, and got sent to labor alongside concentration camp prisoners at the Schwalbe V tunnel project at Berga/Elster, where several died from malnutrition, maltreatment, etc. The tunnels are still there, but no memorial at the site.
