    Whats the story behind it ? How did he find out it was his old tank ?....

      My guess is that the journalist who wrote this article does not know the different between "model of tank", aka T34, and "individual tank"
      I dont know how this veteran could recognise "his" tank, and the article sure doesnt explain it either.

          I know in/near Stalingrad a veteran had found his tank some years ago and he was allowed to drive it up this ramp where it would be displayed for future generations. He had recognised it by serial numbers or something as well as the place where it was abandoned and found again many decades later. Now it's on a hill side for display.
