    Seventy years ago today...

    Today is the 70th anniversary of the liberation of the remaining prisoners held at Auschwitz.

    There were over 42,500 Nazi ghettos and camps throughout Europe, spanning German-controlled areas from France to Russia and Germany itself, operating from 1933 to 1945.

    It is estimated that 15 million to 20 million people died or were imprisoned in the sites.

        This will likely be the last major milestone for many of those who had endure their time at the camp. Hopefully the world will not forget.

          And quite honestly, the exact numbers of the camps...and the dead...don't matter.

          Their religions and nationalities don't matter. Their physical disabilities are irrelevant. It was simply base murder on a scale of which was unseen since ancient times.

          And at the risk of being accused of sermonizing, be reminded that we've learned little: witness Boko Haram, ISIS, political and drug-related murders in Mexico and South America, Rwanda, Liberia etc. etc. etc.

            Hi,

            No one can excuse the horrors of the Nazi KZ system, and the antisemitic/racist philosophy of Fascism/Nazism.
            Equally, no one should forget the horrors of Communism, whose followers murdered millions also.
            For the women of Auschwitz their "liberation" in many cases involved rape by Russian soldiers.
            Extreme right or left wing politics both have identical consequences.
            Violence and murder and the suppression of human rights of those who do not support the dictators in charge.

              Auschwitz

              I first went to Auschwitz in 1999 with the Holocaust Education Trust, Lessons from Auschwitz Programme. Following years allowed me to meet and talk to many survivors. Possibly the most intriguing was lady who was born in Mauthausen.Her mother who is still alive in Cardiff, South Wales was in one of the Hungarian summer transports of 1944.At night and on the selection ramp she heard the SS Officer speaking French, being already pregnant with a slight bump her overcoat
              managed to cover her condition.When her turn arrived she immediately engaged the officer in French complimenting him on his fluency.Flattery did get her out of a spot and she ended up in a sub camp making components for V2's. As the Russians approached she ended up in Mauthausen where a day before American liberation she gave birth to the lady I met.That lady lectured in a Tertiary college in Cambridge and is probably retired now.It was later after the war that her mother realized she had a conversation with Dr Josef Mengele at the selection
              ramp. I never forget my morning with that lady in London, one of many I was transfixed by the human tenacity to survive.

                I really struggle to comprehend the mentality of those times, although the Holocaust was not the first time Germany had been involved in Genocide, re: German South West Africa and the Herero wars.

                Its the dark side of Human nature I feel, they really believed there would be a 1000 year Reich under Hitler, and they thought they would get away with it....

                  I believe a lot more people are capable of heinous crimes given the right circumstances than people think.

                  It was the official and efficient process of death that is chilling and fascinating.

                    German efficiency I suppose, that's why I prefer and drive German cars !!

                    Couple of good films to watch that give an insight into the mentality

                    Conspiracy is very good, with Kenneth Branagh as Heydrich, I also like Eichmann with Thomas Kretschmann, some chilling moments in that.

                      Kretschmann as Eichmann is almost "propaganda" as Kretschmann is too good looking compared to the real Eichmann with his ugly rat face.
